About Dr. Ankur Gupta

Dr. Ankur Gupta, after completing a one-year GPR in Cleveland, started a practice from scratch in 2005. Armed with what he considered adequate knowledge, hand skills, and a personable demeanor, he watched as his practice floundered, finances became unpredictable, and his lower back and spirit toward life became worrisome. Rather than continue the trend, he made a guinea pig out of his office, family, and self, attempting any and all personal and professional “experiments” in self-improvement. Dr. William Paveletz, DMD, is a graduate of Temple University School of Dentistry.

Currently, he is of VOCO’s North America Clinical Directors of Continuing Education. He lectures nationally / internationally to dental retailers, dental societies, and teaching institutions.

Dr. Paveletz has been published in various dental trade publications regarding temporization techniques with dental implants, treating geriatric patients, and fluoridation usage in adolescents.

Professor Karen Baker has been on the Dental College faculty at the University of Iowa for over 40 years and occupies a unique role in dental practice and education. She is a clinical pharmacist with a master’s degree in clinical pharmacology and therapeutics and is focused on patient-specific dental drug therapy. She has given well over 1000 invited programs nationally and internationally and holds memberships in many dental and clinical pharmacology and therapeutics organizations. Her dental education-based pharmacy and drug therapy consultation center are the only ones in the United States. About Mr. Rand Westlund

As Chief Investment Officer, Rand participates in the management functions for each QCR Holdings affiliate-bank trust department, including investment strategy, asset, and economic research, and client portfolio management. Prior to joining QCR Holdings, Inc. in 2000, he served in similar roles in Pennsylvania and Michigan. Rand’s investment career began in the notorious year 1987, and he earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1991. As a regular speaker for community and bank-client gatherings, Rand seeks to bring a view of the economic and investment environment that informs either the knowledgeable or the neophyte listener. Rand and his wife, Ann, have six children, the last of whom successfully left the nest in 2016. A Midwesterner (for the most part), Rand received his undergraduate degree from Bethel College in St. Paul, MN.

About Dr. Robert Peskin

Dr. Robert M. Peskin graduated from Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine in 1977. He subsequently completed General Practice and Dental Anesthesiology Residencies at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Since 1983, he has maintained a private dental anesthesiology practice devoted primarily to the management of anxious, apprehensive, and special needs patients in Garden City, New York. In addition, he provides in-office anesthesia for other dentists throughout the Greater New York metropolitan area.

In July 2011, Dr. Peskin was named Director of the Dental Anesthesiology Residency Program at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center located in Brooklyn, New York. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Hospital Dentistry at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine, and an Assistant Attending the Department of Dental Medicine at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. He is a Diplomate of the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology and a Fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentists, the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, and the Academy of General Dentistry.

Dr. Peskin’s interest in professional liability insurance began in the mid-1980s amidst the malpractice insurance crisis that ultimately led to the creation of the claims-made coverage that is the market standard today. During that time, he lectured frequently on malpractice insurance in general and on its impact on coverage for dentists administering anesthesia. In 1986, he began a 16-year tenure on the New York State Dental Association’s (NYSDA) Council on Insurance. Since 1995 he has presented the NYSDA-endorsed Risk Management® program more than 100 times throughout New York State.

Dr. Peskin has also been extremely active within the tripartite of organized dentistry, including the Nassau County Dental Society, the New York State Dental Association (where he served as Speaker of its House of Delegates for six years), and the American Dental Association. He also has a passion for parliamentary procedure, having been elected to the American Institute of Parliamentarians Board of Directors in 2014, and as its secretary since 2016. Most recently he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Special Care Dentistry Association.

WELLNESS PANEL DISCUSSION (1 CEU)

Recently we have seen movements to decrease the stigma around mental health, but there is still work to do to change perceptions and attitudes around seeking care. A recent ADA Health Policy Institute survey showed that for dentists under the age of 35, 87% reported experiencing anxiety, 76% reported financial problems and 55% reported experiencing depression. The survey also showed that 30% of those dentists were not comfortable seeking out mental health services for themselves or team members. The IDA recently created a Wellness Committee to raise awareness and increase access to wellness programs, with a specific focus on mental wellbeing.

Join us for this interactive panel discussion where dentists will share their personal struggles with mental health, including stress, burnout, anxiety, depression, addiction, and more. Learn about what resources were available to help them work through their struggles.

All IDA members are encouraged to join the co-chairs of the Wellness Committee for an informal wellness-focused lunch where we will gather feedback and identify how the IDA and the wellness committee can be supportive of those struggling with mental
health issues.

Dr. Jarod is the 10^th District Representative on the American Dental Association’s New Dentist Committee and a member of the Council on Dental Education and Licensure. Dr. Wolfe is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Family Medicine - University of Iowa.

He graduated from Cornell College, served three years as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps, then attended the University of Iowa College of Medicine graduating in 1972. Following the completion of a Family Medicine Residency in Sioux City, Iowa, he practiced family medicine in Spencer, Iowa from 1979-2001. Dr. Wolfe joined the faculty in the Department of Family - University of Iowa in 2001.

Dr. Wolfe is the father of Dr. Patrick Wolfe, DDS, and father-in-law of Dr. Jenifer Wolfe, DDS of Altoona, Iowa. Dr. Jen was a pediatric dentist who died on June 20, 2020.

MR. MICHAEL FERJAK

HUMAN SEX TRAFFICKING – MYTHS AND REALITIES (3 CEUS)

This session will provide an accurate and current assessment of human sex trafficking in the United States and Iowa. It will also address the level of awareness of human sex trafficking as it appears today; focusing on the methodology of how persons are subverted and ultimately exploited for the financial gain of the trafficker.

Mr. Ferjak will provide information regarding common structures of human sex trafficking operations, as well as address the counter-intuitive behavior of persons being exploited that is frequently, and mistakenly, described or labeled as “cooperation” or “voluntary participation.” The impact and damage experienced by trafficked persons and an overview of efforts being directed at combating human trafficking will be discussed. The session will also share information on how to effectively report suspected human sex trafficking.

About Mr. Michael Ferjak

Mr. Michael Ferjak, BS, MA, began his law enforcement career in 1976 in suburban Chicago, Illinois. He is a law enforcement academy honor graduate who graduated with honors from Upper Iowa University with an undergraduate degree in Public Administration with an emphasis on law enforcement. He earned his master’s degree in criminal justice from Simpson College and his professional experience and training include highly specialized skills in behavioral analysis, sexual offender threat assessment, human trafficking, and the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC).

He served on the adjunct faculty of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and is an invited guest lecturer at Drake University’s Law School speaking on sex crimes, sexual predators, and human trafficking issues. He is also an invited guest lecturer at Iowa State University in the Gender Studies Honors Program and at Des Moines University School of Medicine. Mr. Ferjak is a recognized expert on human trafficking and the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC). He has testified before the Iowa Legislature and the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on the topic of human trafficking as well as before other government offices and venues throughout the country. Mr. Ferjak is a retired United States Army career officer serving for 27 years in the active and reserve forces.

Today, he operates his training and consulting firm, “I Know A Guy” Training and Consulting, LLC, training professionals throughout North America. Additionally, he remains an active member of the ICAC Task Force and is a special consultant for human trafficking to YSS (Youth Shelter & Services) of Ames and is an advisor for Dorothy’s House and Wings of Refuge, a “safe house” restoration facility for trafficking survivors in Iowa.

DENTAL INFECTION CONTROL FOR TODAY'S IOWA DENTAL PRACTICE (1 CEU satisfies IDB infection control requirement)

The objectives of this course are to explain the infection control recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and discuss how Iowa dental practices can maintain compliance within the law to provide a safe environment for their patients and employees. Topics discussed include, but are not limited to: personal health elements of an Infection Control Program, prevention of transmission of blood borne pathogens and other infectious diseases via hand hygiene, use of PPE, etc.

About Dr. Carrie McKnight

Dr. Carrie McKnight graduated from the University in 1998 and completed a GPR at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in 1999, she then served as a staff dentist at Broadlawns Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa, from 1999-2001. She also was in private practice in Johnston, Iowa, from 2000-2001. From 2001-2005, she was clinical assistant professor and general practice residency director in the Hospital Dentistry division of UI Hospitals and Clinics. Dr. McKnight is currently a clinical assistant professor in the College of Dentistry's Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, and teaches in the Oral Diagnosis Clinic.

Dr. McKnight was awarded Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry in 2015 and is currently in the AGD's Mastertrack. She sees private patients two days per week in the College's Faculty General Practice.

The Meta View on Adjunctive Periodontal Therapies: Treatment Guidelines & the Team Approach (2 CEUS)

This program is created to assist general dentists in feeling more comfortable assessing periodontal disease based on the new 2017 classification and performing the preliminary treatment or to review your present protocols. Successful treatment of periodontitis involves understanding how the disease progresses and the implementation of chemotherapeutic adjuncts for microbial control. As we know periodontal diseases occur as a combination of microbial activity and the individual host response, this course will give you a comprehensive introduction to periodontology in non-surgical adjunctive and host modulation therapy, emphasizing the biologic and clinical concepts. Additionally, it will also focus on the diagnosis and gauging when a dental office should refer to a periodontist for management of patients with other periodontal needs through clinical cases backed with evidence-based approaches.

Dr. Juhi R. Uttamani

Dr. Juhi R. Uttamani is an Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry at the Department of Periodontics. She pursued her Ph.D. in Oral sciences with an advanced postgraduate residency in periodontology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She was also a postdoctoral research fellow at UIC, Chicago. Apart from clinical dentistry, she has been actively engaged in clinical/translational research with a research interest in the identification and characterization of biomolecules and inflammatory markers that modulate oral inflammatory diseases and their resolution. She was a proud recipient of the AAP Nobel Biocare Scholarship at the American Academy of Periodontology 2020. Amongst her several accolades, Dr.Uttamani was a finalist in the AAP Educator Scholarship 2022, the prestigious AADR Hatton Award 2022, and the Balint Orban Memorial Competition, AAP 2020. She enjoys combining her scholarly training and clinical skills to enlighten dental colleagues to deliver exceptional, advanced, evidence-based, and quality dental care.

Join Iowa Dental Board Executive Director Tiffany Allison, and Board member Dr. Lisa Holst as they provide a regulatory update on Iowa Administrative Code 650, the laws that govern the practice of dentistry in Iowa. Attendees will have ample time to ask questions.

About Ms. Tiffany Allison & Dr. Lisa Holst

Tiffany Allison has been the Executive Director of the Iowa Dental Board since July 2022. She
previously served as Associate Director of the Dental Board since November 2020. She has a
Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Mass Media Journalism Major and Political Science from
Simpson College.

Lisa Holst, DDS, is a member of the Iowa Dental Board since being appointed in 2019, and currently serves as vice president. Dr. Holst graduated from the University of Iowa in 1989 and completed a General Practice Residency in Hartford, CT. She owned and operated a private practice in Knoxville for 27 years. Still maintaining full-time practice in Knoxville, she has recently transitioned to partner with a small group practice. She currently sits on the Board's Executive committee, Dental Hygiene committee, CRDTS Steering Committee, and chairs the Continuing Education Advisory committee. Serving on the Board's previous Expanded Function task force, she participated in both the Workforce Shortage and Expanded Function work groups this past year. Dr. Holst is a member of the American Dental Association, American Association of Women Dentists, Academy of General Dentistry, Des Moines District Dental Society, and Omicron Kappa Upsilon honorary dental society.

DR. NATALIA RESTREPO-KENNEDY AND DR. ADITI JAIN

Cracked Teeth from Diagnosis to Treatment (2 CEUS)

During the COVID-19 pandemic incidence of cracked teeth became more common. This session will identify aids to diagnose cracked teeth and discuss methods for treating them. In addition, the session will discuss the prognosis for patients with cracked teeth.

About Dr. Natalia Restrepo-Kennedy & Dr. Aditi Jain

Dr. Natalia Restropo-Kennedy is a clinical associate professor in operative dentistry at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry (UI COD). She earned her dental degree at CES University in Colombia, and a master’s degree in operative dentistry from the UI COD. Dr. Restropo-Kennedy was inducted into the Northeast Iowa Community College Hall of Fame in 2017. That same year, she received the Teach of the Year Award from the UI COD Freshman Dental Students. She is a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the American Dental Education Association.

Dr. Aditi Jain is a clinical associate professor of operative dentistry at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry (UI COD). She earned her dental degree at SDM College of Dental Sciences affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences in Bengaluru, India, and a master’s degree in oral science at the UI COD. Dr. Jain’s research has been published in multiple journals including the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA), the Journal of the Association for Dental Education in Europe, the Journal of Applied Oral Science, and the Journal of Dental Education.

Dental Radiology Update (2 CEUs satisfies IDB dental radiography requirement for dental assistants)

This session will provide dental professionals with innovative information regarding dental imaging. Topics include descriptive terminology for proper documentation; facets of extraoral imaging using various techniques and modalities; common uses of three dimensional imaging and procedural techniques; and interpretation of dental images for education and documentation purposes.

About Ms. Dawn Klostermann

Dawn Klostermann graduated from Northeast Iowa Community College in 1994 from the Dental Assisting Program. She went on to work in private practice doing all aspects of general dentistry. During that time, Ms. Klostermann began to instruct in clinical labs part-time at her alma mater. Ms. Klostermann was invited to present continuing education for NICC in 2000, beginning with Radiology Updates, and adding Infection Control as well as Jurisprudence. Dawn was one of the inaugural students in Iowa to complete expanded functions continuing education training in 2004 and has helped to train countless of her peers to be expanded functions dental assistants through her role as a clinical instructor at NICC. Upon the retirement of her employer in 2008, Dawn left private practice to work primarily at the College. In 2013, Ms. Klostermann graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Clarke University. In 2016, Dawn began her new role as the Dental Assisting Program Director at Northeast Iowa Community College in Peosta, Iowa.

Dawn lives in rural northeast Iowa on a small acreage with her husband, Jim. She has two grown children, and two children are still at home. She loves to volunteer at IMOM and for other non-profit organizations. Dawn is a member of the Iowa Dental Assisting Educators Council, a member of the Iowa Dental Board Workforce Team, and a member of the American Dental Assistants Association. Ms.Klostermann has been a certified dental assistant for 28 years.
